Professor Nerida Vulchanova was the great Bulgarian witch who founded Durmstrang Institute, serving as its first Headmistress,[3] in the Middle Ages.

Biography[]

At some point, Vulchanova suffered a mysterious death, and shortly afterwards Harfang Munter took over the school, in what was later to be considered a dark period in the history of the school: Munter substantially altered the curriculum to focus on duelling and martial magic.[3]

Etymology[]

  • Nerida is an uncommon variant of the female Nereida (Spanish, Greek) or Nerine (Greek), which can be translated as sea nymph.
  • The name Vulchanov [vəl'tʃanov] is the surname version of the given name Vulchan, meaning "wolf", "wolf-man" or "wolf-like". It is formed from вълк ['vəlk] ("wolf") and the suffix -an. It is turned into a patronymic and from there a surname with the suffix -ov and into its female equivalent with the suffix -a.
