The wand of Severus Snape was of an unknown length, wood and core.

History[]

This wand was possibly bought by Severus Snape at age eleven, probably from Ollivander's Wand Shop, before he started his first year of magical education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1971.

As a young boy, alone in his dark bedroom in his family home, Snape would point his wand at the ceiling to swat flies.[2]

During his years as Hogwarts student, he became an incredibly skilful and powerful wizard, managing to create several spells of his own invention, many of which were dark charms, such as the highly dangerous curse Sectumsempra.[3][4][5]

As a Hogwarts professor, he participated as Gilderoy Lockhart's "helper" in his Duelling Club on 17 December 1992, disarming him in front of several students and disintegrating a snake conjured by Draco Malfoy to attack Harry Potter.[6]

On 6 June 1994, Sirius Black took this wand after Harry, Ron, and Hermione disarmed Snape in the Shrieking Shack. He then used it to reveal Scabbers as Peter Pettigrew.[1]

During the second half of the 1995–1996 school year, Snape used his wand to perform Legilimency on Harry Potter as a means to teach him Occlumency, as well as to extract his own memories into the Hogwarts Pensieve beforehand.[7]

On 30 June 1997, Snape reluctantly killed Albus Dumbledore, casting the Killing Curse with this very wand,[8] in a previous arrangement to spare Dumbledore a terminal condition that would have brought a more painful death.[9] He also duelled Harry in his escape from Hogwarts, deflecting and anticipating all of his opponent's moves.[5]

It is unknown what happened to the wand after Severus's death, although it is possible it was buried along with Snape's body, which was common practice in the wizarding world.

Behind the scenes[]

  • On 29 November 2022, J. K. Rowling posted on Twitter in response to a user's question that she had the materials of Snape's wand written down, but that she did not know what they were off the top of her head, saying the information was probably somewhere in her attic.[10]
